ToursByLocals Founding Story
According to the ToursByLocals website, the idea for ToursByLocals was struck during a trip founders Paul Melhus and Dave Vincent made to China in June of 2006. While in Beijing, they were determined to make it to the Great Wall. Due to time constraints they couldn’t adhere to the fixed schedules of the bus tours. A local travel agent came up with a solution: a private driver would take them to the wall, wait while they explored, then return them to the Beijing Airport in time for their flight.
They wouldn’t have a guide, but at least they’d get to see the wall. Upon their arrival at Simatai, they were quickly joined by two local women who began giving them an impromptu and surprisingly thorough tour of the Wall’s history. To their surprise this exchange did not come without strings attached: at the end of their ‘tour’ the women wanted to sell them souvenirs. An awkward exchange followed and they ended up feeling obligated to buy things they really didn’t want.
This exchange left the founders of ToursbyLocals asking themselves several questions. What if conditions had been different? What if these women had a proper way to connect with travelers and share their expert knowledge in a way that left both parties happier? Shortly after coming home from that trip, they began to put together a plan for what such a service would look like and just like that ToursByLocals was born.
